A week of heavy rains has caused historical flooding in Atlanta, GA. As many as 20 inches of rain have fallen in the area sunce Friday causing major flooding which has washed out roads, closed schools, tainted the cities drinking water.
The flooding has also claimed the lives of 3 people as of Monday morning. In Lawrenceville, a suburb of Atlanta, a woman lost her life when she attempted to drive through a road that had been washed out. Another person was found in their vehicle, which had been washed downstream from the road it was traveling down. In Chattanooga, TN two men were found in rushing floodwaters clinging to a chain-link fence. One was rescued but the other is missing after the powerful current pulled him away.
While many roads remained closed due to high water, a mudslide along portions of the Stone Mountain Freeway backed up traffic for miles while workers attempted to clean up the mess.
Unfortunately, the rain is supposed to continue off and on for the rest of the week only adding to all of the problems building in the South.
