1893- A major hurricane struck Southeastern Louisiana with winds of 135mph, which would make it a category 4 hurricane by today’s standards. The hurricane, which would later be known as The Great October Storm, wiped the town of Cheniere Caminada completely off of the map with its tremendous storm surge. Amazingly only one severely damaged home was left standing after the storm past. The Great October Storm caused over 2000 fatalities which made it the deadliest American hurricane until Katrina took its place in 2005.
