A major spring-like storm system is working its way towards the Plains this week and the TSR chase team is gearing up to track the storms. This system could bring the first significant severe weather outbreak in months to the U.S.. Multiple reports of large hail and damaging winds are expected in the Country’s Midesection from late Wednesday afternoon through early Thursday morning. A tornado outbreak is possible but at this time it is too early to tell if conditions will come together for this to happen.
On Wednesday severe weather is possible in parts of Kansas and Nebraska. Tornadoes will be possible in the early evening hours if enough moisture return from the Gulf of Mexico can reach the region in time. If not the storms will more than likely initiate after peak-heating or after dark with large hail being the main threat through Wednesday morning. The Storm Prediction Center has issued a slight risk for the area. The hatched area (seen left) signifies the threat of significant severe weather.
On Thursday a widespread severe weather event is more likely from Iowa to Texas as the system pushes to the east. Storms should fire by mid-afternoon and quickly become severe. If the storms remain discreet supercells then a tornado outbreak could occur. If the storms are more linear and form into a squall-line, which appears more probable at this time, then widespread damaging winds and hail will be the main threats.
