December 3oth, 1988 – Unseasonably cold weather prevailed in the southwestern U.S. A week of subfreezing temperatures in southern California claimed the lives of five people. Redding CA was blanketed with four inches of snow. (The National Weather Summary)

Snow will move its way through the Midwest on Tuesday with one to two inches possible in some locations. Further to the south, rain will be likely along the Gulf Coast states. A new storm system will be heavy snow throughout the Central and Northern Rockies.

December 29th, 1830 – A very heavy snowstorm ushered in the “winter of the deep snow”. The storm produced 30 inches of snow at Peoria IL and 36 inches at Kansas City MO. Cold and snow continued until the middle of February causing great suffering among pioneers. (David Ludlum)

Foggy Chain Reaction

December 28th, 2002 – Ground fog caused a 73 car pileup on the Sam Houston Tollway in Houston, TX. The early morning collision resulted in 23 injuries, but fortunately no fatalities. Typhoon Vamei formed in the South China Sea, about 100 miles north of the Equator. Vamei is the first recorded tropical cyclone to develop within 1.5 degrees of latitude (or about 104 miles) of the equator.
