January 31st, 1953 – A major North Sea storm sent a record storm surge over the dikes of the Netherlands, causing the country’s worst flood disaster. January 30th & 31st, 2005 – A significant ice storm struck parts of northern Georgia on the 30th-31st. Ice accretion was as great as 2 inches in Monroe county, located southeast of Atlanta. The winter storm that pounded the Central Plains on Thursday will slowly drift eastward on Friday bringing heavy snow and some ice along the way. Rain and thunderstorms will effect the Gulf Coast as well and a severe weather cannot be ruled out during the afternoon hours.

January 28th, 1922 – The “Knickerbocker” storm immobilized the city of Washington D.C. The storm produced 28 inches of snow in 32 hours, and the heavy snow caused the roof of the Knickerbocker movie theatre to collapse killing 96 persons. (David Ludlum)
