Snow was measured in feet instead of inches across the Mid-Atlantic on Saturday. Officials strongly suggested that people stay off of the roads until Monday as nearly 40 inches fell in some locations near Washington D.C.. The storm could shatter records that are nearly 100 years-old.
High winds also wreaked havoc in the region with some gusts measured close to 60mph near Baltimore. The snow and wind snapped branches and power lines, leaving hundreds of thousands without power. Major highways and airports were also shut down stranding many near the Nation’s Capital.
The storm has been dubbed “Snowmageddon” by President Obama. A falling tree branch struck a vehicle in the Presidential Motorcade on Friday. The President was forced to ride in an SUV instead of the the limo that Obama is accustomed to.
Dozens of other accidents have been reported as a result of the storm. Unfortunately, two lives have been claim thus far. This is the second major snow storm of the season in the Mid-Atlantic.
